The best way to learn about wine

Wed, 14 Jan 2009 15:46:43 -0800
I was thinking today about the best way to learn about wine. I'd travelled down to Devon to see my son (he's boarding at school) and attend a meeting. After the formalities were over we went together to a coffee shop for some hot chocolate, an then popped in to a record shop on the high street. Now this place is about as far away as you can get from HMV. It is run by someone who's clearly a music enthusiast, and as well as carrying the latest chart items it has a display section of mid-priced c

Malcolm Gluck: what a tosser

Wed, 14 Jan 2009 11:08:49 -0800
Jump to CommentsMalcolm Gluck is a well-known wind-up merchant who likes to pretend he’s the people’s wine critic, but his claim on The Guardian’s website here, in what appears to be a return to the paper after he fell out with it some time ago, thatWine in Britain today is vivacious, fruity, inexpensive, healthy (in moderation) and fun. Beer, on the other hand, is drunk by losers and sadsacks.is trollery at its ugliest and most repulsive. Still, in eight hours he managed to attract more than 60

Retailers don't feel sour grapes about returning bad wine (The Capital Times)

Wed, 14 Jan 2009 07:07:36 -0800
At a recent Barriques wine tasting, a bottle of Barbaresco was the talk of the evening. It wasn't because the Italian red wine was intensely fruity or spicy, or even that it tasted good. In fact, this Barbaresco was the star of the show because it was bad. The musty smell was a quick giveaway. "I pulled a cork, and I could smell it right away," said Barriques owner and wine buyer Finn Berge. ...

It's been a busy, boozy day in the pub today. It started with an early working lunch for the folks from Batemans, who were here to witness their XXXB go on as a permanent ale alongside Landlord. Today, for the first time, we offered four cask beers at once. In the evening my new wine merchant Andy held a tasting for regulars in the back room. He left behind lots of half-full bottles that are being caned in a slightly riotous atmosphere as I type.

Imbibing With Georg

Tue, 13 Jan 2009 09:43:06 -0800
I am very pleased to begin 2009 with my writing debut in Imbibe, a handsome and well-edited Portland-based magazine I have long admired. The piece is about Georg Riedel, the reigning emperor of stemware. Looking at it from a certain perspective, the glassmaker has had as big an impact on the wine-drinking world, and has as much a hand in the wine revolution of the past decade or so, as any vineyard owner or winemaker. Think of it. The average Joe can remember few if any of the souls that actuall
